I want to die.

That bitch finally got her way and made me feel this way—as if I can’t breathe and want to hurt someone. I can barely stand the thought that Hunter’s mouth is probably on her right now. I untangle myself from Ryan’s arms and start fighting my way through the crowd to get away. I need air. I need open space. I hear Ryan yelling after me, but the crowd has closed up after me and I don’t stop.

I hate that Hunter West has made me feel this way.

And I hate myself for being so dumb.

It’s like every bad cliché. The guy sweet talks the girl to get her in bed and then, once they have sex, she’s dead to him.

I thought I was smarter than that. I guess I’m not.

In the parking lot, I lean against Oscar’s big Hummer and try to calm myself down. Ryan appears at my side.

“You okay?” He looks at me with such concern, I want to cry.

“I just got a little claustrophobic.”

He nods understandingly. He puts his arm around me and lightly rubs my back.

Guilt floods me. It’s partly true, but partly a lie. I was feeling a little claustrophobic, but mainly I was running away from seeing Hunter. But I know Ryan will buy the excuse.

When my mom and dad were in the middle of all the ugly stuff, I would have panic attacks and fits of claustrophobia. Ryan knows that.

“You still get those?”

I nod, telling the truth. “Sometimes.”

I hear the laughter and sounds of the party filtering up from the beach. I can go back there and face whatever waits for me. My friends are waiting there for me. Besides, Hunter and Ava left, and if they are doing what I think they are doing, they won’t be back anytime soon. It hurts to even think that, but it’s a reality I’m going to have to live with so I might as well face it now.

I grab Ryan’s hand. “I’m ready to go back. I could use a drink.”

“I think you’ve been under a lot of stress,” he says. “Why don’t you relax and I’ll be the designated driver?”

He smiles. He leans forward for a split second as if he is going to kiss me but then stops when I hold up my palm.

To my surprise, he gently takes my hand and kisses the palm.

“I can wait, Kennedy. I can wait for as long as you need.”

I close my eyes. I could not feel worse. I open my mouth to tell him how I feel, but when I see his face, I chicken out.

“Let’s go, DD. I need a drink. Or two.”

Back at the bonfire, there is no sign of Hunter and Ava. Ryan leaves and comes back with a red cup full of orange juice and vodka, and I gulp it down and ask for another.

“Easy now,” he says.

I smile. “You offered to be the designated driver.”

“Guilty as charged. I’ll be right back.”

I’m laughing and having fun with my girls and Ryan when there is a murmuring in the crowd.
